Washington, DC [US], March 1 (HBTV): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused to apologise for his exchange with former US President Donald Trump during an exclusive interview with Fox News on Friday, following what was described as a tense and unsuccessful round of Ukraine-US talks.

While Zelenskyy stood firm on his position, he acknowledged that the episode was ‘not good for both sides.’ However, he reiterated that Ukraine would face significant challenges in defending itself against Russia without continued US support. He also expressed regret that the confrontation was televised but maintained, ‘Please be correct. I want to be polite.’

When asked whether he owed Trump an apology, Zelenskyy responded, ‘No. I respect the President. And I respect the American people. I'm not sure we did something bad.’

Addressing speculation on whether the confrontation was premeditated, Zelenskyy described the situation as ‘really tough’ and referenced strong remarks made about Ukraine during the discussions. He questioned, ‘Where is our friendship?’ in reference to US-Ukrainian ties.

Zelenskyy also defended Ukraine’s position, insisting that the ‘mineral deal is part of the structure of the security guarantee.’

Commenting on Trump’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin—who has at times been described as having undue influence over the former US leader—Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked whether Trump was ‘too close’ to Putin. Zelenskyy responded, ‘I want him to be in the middle. I want him to be on our side.’

When asked if his relationship with Trump could be repaired following their disagreement, Zelenskyy affirmed, ‘Yes, of course.’

The Ukrainian President concluded the interview by expressing gratitude and regret over the situation but made clear he was not apologising to Trump. ‘We are thankful and sorry for this. I mean this, we wanted very much to have strong relations,’ he said.
