Kampala (Uganda), November 29 (HBTV): At least 15 people have been killed and over 100 others are missing following heavy rains that triggered landslides in eastern Uganda, according to Al Jazeera. The landslides occurred on Wednesday in six villages in the mountainous Bulambuli District, which is located in the eastern part of the country.
The Uganda Police Force reported that the landslides affected five villages in Buluganya Sub County, including Masugu, Namachele, Natola, Namagugu, and Tagalu. Efforts to locate the missing individuals are ongoing, with rescue operations being complicated by impassable roads.
"Fifteen bodies have been recovered, and 15 injured people have been rescued and admitted to Buluganya Health Center. However, 113 people are still missing," the Uganda Police Force said in an update.
The Uganda Red Cross Society, along with other emergency responders, is continuing its rescue efforts. Local authorities have been working with the community to provide assistance, but the situation remains dire.
In addition to the landslides, the heavy rainfall caused flooding in the northwest after a tributary of the Nile River, the Tangi River, burst its banks. This has led to the submersion of the Nwoya-Pakwach road, connecting Uganda to South Sudan, which has been cut off by floodwaters. Emergency boat crews were deployed near Pakwach to rescue stranded motorists, though one rescue boat capsized, resulting in one death.
The death toll from the landslides and flooding is expected to rise as the rescue operations continue.
