Port Blair [Mauritius], March 12 (HBTV): Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mauritius saw the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance bilateral ties.
The MoUs covered areas such as the currency settlement system, water management, and the sharing of shipping information. An MoU between the Central Bank of Mauritius and the Reserve Bank of India on a Local Currency Settlement System was signed. Additionally, a Credit Facility Agreement between the Government of Mauritius and the State Bank of India was established to finance projects under the Pipe Replacement Programme being implemented by the Central Water Authority.
Another MoU was signed between the Institute of Foreign Service of India and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius for a training programme for diplomats. A Technical Agreement on the Sharing of White Shipping Information was also signed between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius Police Force.
An MoU between the Financial Crimes Commission of Mauritius and India's Enforcement Directorate was agreed upon. Additionally, the Ministry of Industry, SMEs and Cooperatives of Mauritius signed an MoU with India's Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises on cooperation in the field of MSMEs.
Other agreements included an MoU between the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms of Mauritius and the National Centre for Good Governance under India's Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances for training public officers. Another MoU between the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and the Prime Minister's Office of Mauritius aimed to enhance administrative efficiency.
Prime Minister Modi's visit also included the inauguration of the Civil Service College and an Area Health Centre, both built with India's grant assistance. These projects are intended to strengthen Mauritius' administrative and healthcare capabilities, fostering long-term growth and capacity building.
PM Modi's commitment to international development has been evident in multiple key projects worldwide. Under his leadership, India financed the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital in Bhutan, with its second phase completed in 2024. In Bangladesh, PM Modi and the then Prime Minister jointly inaugurated the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit-II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
Strengthening regional ties, PM Modi and the Nepali Prime Minister flagged off the Jayanagar-Kurtha railway in 2022, the first broad-gauge passenger railway link between India and Nepal, built with Indian grant assistance.
In 2021, PM Modi and Seychelles President Ramkalawan inaugurated the Magistrates' Court building in Victoria, Seychelles, via video conferencing. In 2020, PM Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Jugnauth jointly inaugurated the new Supreme Court building in Mauritius.
Additional milestones under PM Modi's leadership include the Afghan-India Friendship Dam inaugurated in 2016, the Jaffna Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka inaugurated in 2022, and the Afghan Parliament Building completed in 2015.
