Frankfurt [Germany], November 8 (HBTV): A United States citizen was arrested in Frankfurt, Germany, for allegedly attempting to offer US military intelligence to China, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
The Office of the Federal Prosecutor stated that the accused had worked for the US forces "until recently," and an investigation is being conducted "in close coordination" with German intelligence agencies.
The accused reportedly contacted Chinese officials this year, offering them "sensitive information about the US military," the report stated, citing the prosecutors.
Neither the United States nor China has responded to the arrest as of yet.
Notably, Berlin has experienced a rise in suspected spying cases linked to Russia since the Ukraine war and to China, as Germany’s relations with Beijing face increasing pressure. Last month, Germany warned of an elevated risk of espionage from Beijing and tightened security checks for staff in sensitive government and business sectors.
In a separate incident from April, three Germans were arrested on suspicion of attempting to transfer technology that could benefit the Chinese navy. Also in April, a European Union staffer associated with a far-right German politician was accused of collaborating with Chinese intelligence.
Concerns over alleged Chinese spying have grown across the West in recent months, according to Al Jazeera. In March, the US and Britain accused Beijing of engaging in cyberespionage targeting millions of individuals, including lawmakers, academics, journalists, and companies such as defense contractors.
