The 'One Nation, One Election' Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, proposes holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across India. Opponents of the bill argue that it could disproportionately benefit the ruling party, potentially giving it undue influence over the electoral process in states and undermining the autonomy of regional parties.
The bills were approved by the Cabinet last week and aim to facilitate simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. During the introduction of the bill, 269 members voted in favor, while 196 voted against it.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that when the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill was discussed in the Cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for it to be sent to the JPC for detailed discussion.
