Dhaka [Bangladesh], December 3 (HBTV): Bangladesh's Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, is set to issue a call for national unity, as reported by The Daily Star. The announcement was made by Yunus' Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, during a press conference on Tuesday at the Foreign Services Academy in Dhaka.
Yunus is scheduled to meet student leaders at the state guest house, Jamuna, starting at 6:00 pm local time today. On Wednesday, he plans to hold discussions with major political parties, followed by a meeting with religious leaders on Thursday to foster national unity.
This move comes amidst reports of attacks on minorities following the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on sedition charges. The arrest led to unrest, including clashes in Chattogram's Court Building area on November 27, where a lawyer was killed.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh issued a statement reaffirming the government's commitment to maintaining religious harmony. The statement emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring safety and security for all citizens, regardless of their religious identity, and upholding the rule of law.
The statement read: 'Bangladesh government is firm to uphold religious harmony in Bangladesh, irrespective of religious affiliation, and uphold the rule of law for every Bangladeshi without distinction.'
India has also raised concerns about the situation. During a recent media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged Bangladesh's interim government to take decisive steps to protect minorities.
Jaiswal said: 'India has consistently and strongly raised with the Bangladesh government the threats and targeted attacks on Hindus and other minorities. The interim government must live up to its responsibility of protecting all minorities. We are concerned about the surge of extremist rhetoric, increasing incidents of violence, and provocation.'
The call for national unity by Yunus is expected to address these challenges and promote dialogue for stability in the nation.
