New Delhi [India], February 12 (HBTV): Delhi Police has launched an operation to locate Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan after he was booked for allegedly leading an attack on a Delhi Police team and threatening them in Jamia Nagar.
An FIR has been registered against Khan for allegedly manhandling and threatening police personnel and preventing them from carrying out their duty. The case has been filed under sections 221, 121(1), 132, 191(2), 190, 263(b), 351(3), and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
The incident occurred on February 10 at around 3 pm when a Delhi Police Crime Branch team went to the Jogabai Extension area of Jamia Nagar to apprehend Shavez Khan, an accused in a 2018 attempted murder case. When officers attempted to interrogate him, he reportedly refused to cooperate. At that point, Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan arrived with 20-25 supporters and allegedly threatened the police.
According to the FIR, Khan and his supporters stated that they ‘do not value courts’ or the police. They allegedly pushed and shoved the officers and took the accused Shavez Khan with them. The FIR accuses Khan and his supporters of obstructing police duties and engaging in a scuffle.
Since the incident, Khan has been absconding. The FIR against him includes multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for allegedly obstructing the arrest of a suspect and facilitating his escape.
On Monday, a police team visited Khan’s residence in connection with the allegations against him and his supporters. According to the police, when the Crime Branch team initially arrived in Jamia Nagar to arrest Shavez Khan, they found that he had already fled.
The police are now working to trace Amanatullah Khan and question him regarding the suspect’s escape. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Delhi) Ravi Kumar Singh confirmed that Shavez Khan is also currently absconding and that further investigation is ongoing.
‘A Crime Branch team had come to nab a proclaimed offender, Shavez Khan. While he was being questioned, Amanatullah Khan arrived with his supporters and freed him. Shavez Khan has been absconding since then. We are undertaking legal proceedings, and all necessary actions will be taken. Efforts are being made to establish contact with Amanatullah Khan, but we have yet to do so. The investigation is underway,’ DCP Singh told ANI.
Amanatullah Khan, the AAP MLA from Okhla, had retained his seat in the recent elections by a margin of 23,639 votes.
