Agartala, Tripura, October 22 (HBTV): The Director General of Police of Tripura, Amitabh Ranjan, on Monday dismissed claims of a breakdown in law and order, asserting that the police have been given a 'free hand' to deal with elements attempting to disrupt peace.

Speaking to the press during the Police Commemoration Parade at the Manoranjan Debbarma Memorial Police Reserve Field, Ranjan addressed accusations from certain groups criticising the state's police force. He stated that some vested interest groups are trying to cast Tripura Police in a negative light.

However, the data tells a very different story. This year has recorded the lowest figures across all major categories, including crimes against individuals and property-related disputes. The DGP pointed to the peaceful conduct of recent elections as a clear indicator of effective policing. Referring to recent incidents of communal unrest, Ranjan noted that even in areas where tensions had flared, Durga Puja was celebrated peacefully.

When questioned about a recent case of custodial torture resulting in the death of an individual, Ranjan admitted to ‘errors.’ However, the official said the chief minister has given clear instructions to act decisively against all offenders. The police officers involved in wrongdoing have been removed from their positions and jailed.
