Tripura: Police foil drug trafficking attempt, seize 26 kg cannabis from two women in Damcherra

Tripura police have arrested two women and seized approximately 26 kg of cannabis, wrapped in 10 plastic-coated packets, from the Damcherra area of north Tripura district.

Agartala (Tripura) [India], June 14 (HBTV): Tripura police have arrested two women and seized approximately 26 kg of cannabis, wrapped in 10 plastic-coated packets, from the Damcherra area of north Tripura district. They were headed towards Assam, police said. 

The officer in charge of Damcherra police station, Sanjay Majumdar, reported that the incident occurred at about 1:30 pm on Thursday during a routine check at the East Narendra Nagar checkpoint in Damcherra.    

The two women identified as one Azmiri Begum and a Shalini Das roused the suspicion of the police, updates stated. 

‘The suspects, Azmiri Begum from Bihar and Shalini Das from West Bengal, were found with several plastic-wrapped packets of cannabis in their bags. They were arrested and charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Preliminary investigations revealed they had travelled from Agartala to Panisagar by train, then to Damcherra by auto-rickshaw, intending to enter Assam,’ Majumdar said.

The women were taken to the police station.  The police have launched an investigation to uncover further details of the case, he said.
