Guwahati, Assam, January 6 (HBTV): After entering the Guinness World Records for the ‘largest Bihu dance at a single venue' in 2023, Assam is now aspiring to establish another world record with a Jhumur dance recital.
This event is scheduled to be held on February 24 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusajai in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and preparations are proceeding vigorously.
Assam has approximately 70 lakh people from the tea tribes spread across Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Kokrajhar, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Udalguri, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj. The tea tribes' heritage in Assam is intrinsically connected to the tea industry. During the 1800s, the British transported Adivasis from central India to Assam to work at tea plantations. The initial commercial tea production in Assam commenced in 1835 with the establishment of the Chabua tea garden in Dibrugarh district.
More than 7,000 dancers are set to participate in the grand Jhumur dance performance. Assam’s vibrant cultural heritage is set to take centre stage at the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0: Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025.
In Tinsukia district, a training session for cultural dance and music was held at the Chuta Tingrai Tea Garden campus field. The program featured 172 girls practicing Jhumur dance and 40 boys trained to play the Madal drum, which is come from different places of Tindukia district.
The training was conducted under the guidance of four masters. Tribal girls and boys were seen at the training at Jhumur.
Member of Legislative Assembly Sanjay Kishan said an opportunity has come for the first time that Jhumar dance is being organized in such a way. Jhumar dance will be shown not only to the people of Assam but to the whole world,’ he said.
‘On February 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be present. So, this is a very big achievement. And you can see how much enthusiasm there is in every part. And all the people are very excited about the fact that the dance is now going to get recognition in the whole world,’ he said.
‘I hope the Jhumar dance of the tribal community will fly its flag to the whole world. Definitely, Jhumar will be discussed and people will try to know about Jhumar,’ he said.
