Guwahati, Assam, August 28 (HBTV): A rally demanding the formation of autonomous states of Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, and West Karbi Anglong under Article 244 (A) of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India was conducted in Diyungbra on Tuesday.

The rally was organised by the Dimasa Students’ Union and Karbi Students’ Association. It started from the Diyungbra ground and culminated in front of the office of the Diyungbra sub-divisional officer.

Later, a memorandum addressed to the prime minister of India was submitted. The proposed Constitution Amendment Bill No. 125 will amend the Sixth Schedule to a great extent. Those making the demand say the government is trying to undermine the powers of the Sixth Schedule.

Therefore, the people of the three hill districts have long demanded for the formation of an autonomous state which has intensified even further now.

The movement for an autonomous state started from the 1990s.
