Imphal (Manipur) [India], January 4 (HBTV): Kangpokpi district’s Superintendent of Police Manoj Prabhakar sustained head injuries after being hit by a stone when angry tribal mobs attacked the SP’s office on Friday night. The mob was protesting the alleged 'failure' of central forces to vacate Saibol village, bordering Imphal East district, officials said.
Earlier in the day, volunteers of a group called the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) locked the deputy commissioner’s office. When the protesters attempted to lock the office of the Kangpokpi Superintendent of Police, a confrontation ensued between the mob and security forces.
Gun-wielding individuals were seen openly engaging in violent activities.
The rioters pelted stones and projectiles towards the office to vent their anger over the continued deployment of central forces, particularly the Border Security Force and the Central Reserve Police Force, at Saibol village, an official said.
Vehicles of district police stationed within the compound of the office were damaged, according to updates.
There were reports of firing by armed miscreants among the protesters, and injuries have been reported.
Additional central forces are being deployed to bring the situation under control.
A large number of protesters had gathered in front of the police office since the afternoon, demanding the removal of central forces from Saibol village, the official added.
