Mentally challenged woman raped; five booked in Assam

Five persons in Assam’s Karimganj district have been booked allegedly for gang-raping a mentally challenged woman in Kayasthagram of the district.

Karimganj, Assam, July 3 (HBTV): Five persons in Assam’s Karimganj district have been booked allegedly for gang-raping a mentally challenged woman in Kayasthagram of the district. Five youths allegedly dragged the woman into an auto rickshaw, which was captured on CCTV, and allegedly raped her.   

The superintendent of police of Karimganj, Partha Pratim Das, ordered a full scale investigation into the case. The Neelambazaar police team rounded up the youths and booked them. The accused youths have been identified as one Fakar Mia, an Abdul Mastak, a Samim Uddin, one Riyaz Uddin, and a Pranesh Sharma.   

With new criminal laws in place in the country with effect from July 1, what punishment would be served against the accused remains to be seen.
