Imphal, Manipur, August 7 (HBTV): In a dramatic statement, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday said in the assembly that he is ready to accept the ‘death penalty’ if there is no illegal immigration in his state. Singh declared in the floor of the house that if no illegal immigrant is found in Manipur, he is ready to be executed.
Highlighting the gravity of the ongoing crisis, Singh said the matter is between those who understand the consequences of illegal immigration and those who deny its existence.
On Tuesday, the Manipur Legislative Assembly on Tuesday in a unanimous decision moved to establish a dedicated house committee aimed at detecting and deporting illegal immigrants. The resolution was adopted as proposed by Singh, the leader of the house, in giving his statement in response to a motion call raised by Naga People’s Front Member of Legislative Assembly Leishiyo Keishing. The move by the chief minister was also supported by the Congress Leader Party leader O Ibobi, who suggested inclusion of members from all communities.
Leishiyo highlighted the lack of a concrete national policy to tackle illegal immigration, and criticized the Indian Foreigner Act for inadequacies in dealing with the issue effectively.
