Guwahati (Assam) [India], December 3 (HBTV): The Drug Disposal Committee of the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police disposed of 37,000 bottles of contraband Phensedyl cough syrup in the Panikhaiti area on the outskirts of Guwahati on Tuesday.
Pranab Jyoti Goswami, CPRO of Assam Police, stated in a press release that the contraband, containing a total of 3,700 litres of Phensedyl syrup, was disposed of at M/s Fresh Air Waste Management Services Pvt. Ltd., Panikhaiti. The market value of the seized contraband is estimated to be INR 70 lakh.
The STF, under the leadership of IGP Partha Sarathi Mahanta, has intensified operations against narcotics dealers. Between March 2023 and November 2024, the STF conducted 164 operations across Assam, seizing narcotics worth INR 800 crore and apprehending 325 individuals. The seized contraband includes heroin, opium, cannabis, cough syrups, and other illicit substances.
Sudhakar Singh, SP (Zone-I), CID, Assam, chaired the Drugs Disposal Committee overseeing the operation. The committee included representatives from the District Magistrate's office, the Joint Director of Health, and the Narcotics Control Bureau.
This marks the STF's second drug disposal programme during this period. A third round is scheduled soon, with court orders obtained to dispose of additional seized contraband, including 3.06 kg of heroin, 37.26 kg of opium, 3,873 kg of cannabis, and 80,400 capsules and tablets. The first round of drug disposal occurred on March 16, disposing of items linked to 10 registered cases.
These efforts underscore Assam Police's commitment to combating drug trafficking and ensuring public safety.
