Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 3 (HBTV): Floods in Assam have so far claimed 46 lives. Eight people died on Wednesday in the state after drowning in flood waters. 

According to a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), eight people died in the past 24 hours in the state including two from Sonitpur district, one each in Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath and Tinsukia district, taking the total death toll to 46 while three others are missing. 

The overall situation in the state is still critical as more than 16.25 lakh people in 29 districts have been affected by the second wave of floods.

Dhubri is the worst flood-hit district affecting 2,23,210 people.

Approximately 2,800 villages in 105 revenue circles are still flooded and water has inundated approximately 39,451.51 hectares of crop area. 

Over 3.86 lakh people are taking shelter in 515 relief camps and distribution centres set up by administration in 24 flood hit districts. 

The ASDMA said that 1120165 animals are also affected in the deluge. 

Rescue teams from the disaster response force, emergency Services, administration, Indian army, and paramilitary forces are engaged in rescue operations in different areas and on Wednesday rescued 8,377 people.

During the past 24 hours, flood waters have damaged approximately 100 roads, 14 bridges, seven embankments and breached four other embankments.
