Congress MLAs on Wednesday staged a protest in the premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly, demanding a discussion on the termination of Polytechnic faculty members in the state.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], March 12 (HBTV): Congress MLAs on Wednesday staged a protest in the premises of the Assam Legislative Assembly, demanding a discussion on the termination of Polytechnic faculty members in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Assam's Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia stated that they demand answers from the government regarding the termination of faculty members at newly established Polytechnics.

Calling the termination 'unfortunate,' Saikia accused the government of 'derecognising' the services provided by those faculty members.

'Today we asked for an adjournment motion to discuss a very important matter. In 2017, the Assam government set up more than 11 Polytechnics, and the teachers appointed in those institutions are highly qualified. The cut-off mark for the application was 82 per cent; all due processes and interviews were held... They were only asking for better service conditions as they were not paid regular salaries, and their appointment letters were not issued; they were protesting for that. Two days back, the government terminated their services, derecognising their efforts... This is very unfortunate,' Saikia said.

The LoP further stated that several states have provisions ensuring that jobs are filled by locals, whereas the Assam government, by such moves, is trying to 'push' Assamese talent away from their home state.

'In Assam, if our young and talented don't get jobs, how will they stay in the state? Will those posts not be filled by outsiders? There are provisions in states like Gujarat ensuring that maximum job posts are filled by locals. The government is trying to push Assamese talents away from their home state. We demand discussions on it and answers from the government,' he said.

Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma chaired the first-ever conference of District Commissioners and Co-District Commissioners at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati. He reviewed initiatives aimed at enhancing public welfare and governance, along with several other key issues.

The Assam Chief Minister instructed the administration to implement all budgetary announcements and build on the gains of Advantage Assam 2.0. (ANI)
