Assam: Police seize 1 kg of heroin worth INR 5 crore in Sivasagar, four arrested

Assam Police seized approximately 1 kg of heroin worth INR 5 crore and arrested four drug peddlers in Sivasagar district.

Sivasagar (Assam) [India], March 5 (HBTV): Assam Police seized approximately 1 kg of heroin worth INR 5 crore and arrested four drug peddlers in Sivasagar district. 

According to reports, the operation was jointly conducted by the Sivasagar and Golaghat district police, led by John Das, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Golaghat.

John Das stated that based on information from Sarupathar police station case number 18/24 under Sections 21(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act, an anti-drug operation was carried out on March 4 at Halwating in Sivasagar district. The operation, led by ASP (Crime) Golaghat in coordination with Sivasagar police, resulted in the arrest of four individuals and the seizure of 65 packets of heroin, weighing 992.13 grams. The drugs were hidden in a secret compartment in the trunk of a vehicle.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Pinku Debnath, Narayan Debnath, Baburam Konwor, and Rabi Jaiswal.

‘Rabi Jaiswal was the main accused in the Sarupathar police station case and had been absconding since July 2023. The consignment was being transported from a neighboring state, with Tinsukia as its destination,’ Das said.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X: ‘Drugs worth INR 5 crore recovered. In a joint anti-narcotics operation carried out by @GolaghatPolice and @Sivasagarpol at Haluwating under Sivasagar district, the following items were recovered: 2 Bolero vehicles, 992.13 grams of heroin, people apprehended.’

Earlier, on January 20, in a separate crackdown, police in Assam’s Cachar district seized narcotics worth INR 1 crore and arrested one person. Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta stated that the Cachar district police, acting on secret information, conducted a special operation at Digharkhal Toll Gate under Kalain police station to curb illegal narcotics transportation.
