Guwahati (Assam) [India], November 6 (ANI): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the site of the new flyover on Tuesday night, which will connect Dighalipukhuri to the Noonmati area in Guwahati.

After citizen groups took to the streets and staged protests demanding the preservation of trees around Dighalipukhuri, a historic tank in Guwahati city, the Assam Chief Minister told the media that the state government has decided not to cut the trees. He added that the length of the new flyover will now be shorter.

Criticizing a section of the protestors, the Assam Chief Minister said that some people are always trying to destabilize the government and disrupt the situation, as they do not want development.

Earlier, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X: "I want to assure you that the government is deeply committed to preserving our city's heritage and environment while advancing infrastructure. In constructing the flyover from Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati, we are sincerely working to protect the old trees in the area. I urge all stakeholders to allow the Public Works Department a few days to explore an alternative proposal and assess its feasibility."

Earlier this year, in February, the Assam Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for an over 5 km long, four-lane elevated corridor from Dighalipukhuri to Noonmati, with an estimated cost of INR 852.68 crore.
