Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday attributed the substantial decline in crime rates to the strong measures taken by Assam Police.

Guwahati (Assam) [India], March 29 (HBTV): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday attributed the substantial decline in crime rates to the strong measures taken by Assam Police, stating that the state has witnessed uninterrupted governance over the past few years.

Speaking at the Dikshant Parade of 70 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) probationers at the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) in Umsaw village, Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya, Sarma said the current state government, since assuming office, has pursued the goal of transforming Assam into a crime-free state where citizens can actively contribute to progress.

In line with the government’s commitment to a crime-free and drug-free Assam, the Chief Minister said that Assam Police has been addressing all forms of crime. He noted that the police force’s firm stance against criminals has sent a strong message that disruption has no place in the state.

Addressing the probationers, Sarma highlighted the role of DSPs in providing ground-level leadership and maintaining law and order. He urged them to uphold the highest standards of professional excellence, integrity, and honesty to meet the expectations of society and the government.

Praising the role of Assam Police, Sarma said the crime rate per lakh population in the state has significantly dropped from 349 in 2020 to 139 in 2024.

‘The charge sheet rate has surged from 47.8 per cent to 66.7 per cent, while the conviction rate has increased to 22.9 per cent in 2024. Crimes against women have declined from 26,352 cases in 2020 to 5,555 in 2024. Stringent action against child marriage offenders has led to a substantial rise in case registrations, from 138 cases in 2020 to 5,498 cases in 2023,’ he said.

The Chief Minister also noted that Assam Police has maintained an unwavering crackdown on drug trafficking.

‘Since 2020, drugs worth INR 2,885 crore have been seized, and over a thousand bighas of cannabis and opium cultivation have been destroyed. In 2024 alone, Assam Police registered 3,323 drug-related cases, underscoring its firm stand against narcotics,’ he said.

Congratulating the 70 DSPs, Sarma said the passing-out parade, marking the culmination of the 54th Basic Course at NEPA, was a significant milestone in the lives of the officer trainees. He expressed confidence that the rigorous training at NEPA would equip them with the skills necessary to face various challenges.

On the occasion, Sarma extended his gratitude to NEPA Director Danesh Rana, faculty members, and the NEPA fraternity for their dedication to shaping the future of policing. He emphasized that the drills and discipline instilled in the officer trainees would empower them to meet societal expectations.

The Chief Minister further stated that the police force plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of security among citizens. Calling upon the new officers to operate with empathy and a humane approach, he urged them to strengthen the bond between the police and the public, ensuring the safety and well-being of all sections of society, especially senior citizens.

Since its establishment in 1978, NEPA's Basic Courses have trained over 5,000 DSPs and Sub-Inspectors. Assam alone has seen the training of over 1,000 DSPs, Cadet Sub-Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors since 2016. The 54th Basic Course, which began on April 2, 2024, included 70 DSPs, with 62 from Assam and eight from Mizoram.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal, NEPA Director Danesh Rana, Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
