People in Manipur have begun surrendering illegally held weapons.

Imphal (Manipur) [India], February 26 (HBTV): Following an appeal by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and coordinated public awareness efforts by the District Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF, people in Manipur have begun surrendering illegally held weapons.

On Tuesday, a total of 87 weapons were surrendered in Churachandpur, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, Jiribam, and Imphal West districts. Additionally, security forces conducted search operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts.

According to police reports, a pompi (likely 84mm) measuring 10 feet in length, another pompi (likely 51mm improvised mortar), three pompi bombs (destroyed in situ), and three IEDs (approximately 5.5 kg) with detonators (also destroyed in situ) were recovered from the general area of H. Monjang village under MRH police station in Tengnoupal district.

Earlier, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, visited Manipur on Monday and Tuesday to assess the situation along the Indo-Myanmar Border (IMB) and review ongoing border infrastructure developments in the state, according to a release by the Ministry of Defence.

During his visit, Lieutenant General Ghai met with Governor Bhalla, the State Security Advisor, the Chief Secretary of Manipur, and the Director General of Police. He focused on the operational preparedness of the Indian Army, assessed the security situation along the Indo-Myanmar Border, and examined the current security dynamics in the state, particularly in fringe areas.

He emphasized a ‘whole-of-government approach’ during discussions with key stakeholders, highlighting the need for enhanced border management and strengthened security infrastructure along the IMB.

Lieutenant General Ghai’s visit underscored the collaborative efforts between the military and state authorities in implementing strategic initiatives aimed at promoting stability and ensuring the welfare of the people of Manipur.
