Imphal, Manipur, June 6 (HBTV): Manipur police have arrested a man who allegedly attacked a 12-year-old school girl on the morning of June 6 in Thoubal district of Manipur.      

The man identified as one Sapam Sarat attacked the school girl with an iron rod. He is said to be approximately 48 years old. The incident happened in the morning at Sapam Sabal Leikai in Thoubal district under Khongjom police station.    

The victim was identified as 12-year-old Jenika Devi Sapam. The young girl was said to be a class six student in a school called Ibemhal Bishal Academy. Following the attack, she was immediately rushed to Thoubal District Hospital and later referred to Shija Hospital. However, she succumbed to injury on the way.  

The dead body of the young girl is now at RIMS hospital’s mortuary for postmortem.     

The motive of the crime is yet to be ascertained. The authorities have arrested the assailant.   

Sapam Sarat is from Sapam Sabal Leikai. According to eyewitnesses’ accounts, Sarat attacked Sapam without any provocation while she was on her way to school. The perpetrator tried to escape the crime scene but was nabbed by the public and handed over to the police.       

Updates said the victim was on her way to school for an examination during the time the incident took place.      

At press time, school students were reportedly protesting at Sapam Sarat’s home demanding justice for Jenika Devi Sapam.
