Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 31 (HBTV): An elephant calf that had been separated from its mother in the Varapalayam area was rescued by the forest department staff in Coimbatore and relocated to the Theppakadu Elephant Camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, Nilgiris district.
As per the instructions of the Tamil Nadu Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, the calf, only a few months old, was transported to the camp for care and rehabilitation.
The forest department initially attempted to reunite the calf with its mother after noticing it wandering around the Varapalayam area near Thudiyalur. Unfortunately, the mother elephant was later confirmed to have died. Efforts were then made to integrate the calf with another elephant herd over the course of a week.
Given the calf's vulnerable condition, the Tamil Nadu Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Wildlife Conservation Officer directed that it be kept at the Theppakadu Elephant Camp.
Upon arrival at the camp, the calf underwent a medical examination by forest veterinarians. The forest department performed a traditional 'pooja' for the young elephant and entrusted its care to experienced Adivasi herders at the camp.
The Theppakadu Elephant Camp has been instrumental in providing care for orphaned and injured elephants, ensuring their well-being in a safe and natural environment.
