Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], November 23 (HBTV): Punjab recorded a 63.91% voter turnout in by-elections for four assembly constituencies: Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC), and Barnala. Gidderbaha registered the highest turnout at 81.90%, while Chabbewal saw the lowest at 53.43%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Key details shared by the poll body include:
- Gidderbaha: 81.90% voter turnout; counting to be conducted in 13 rounds.
- Dera Baba Nanak: 64.01% voter turnout; counting in 18 rounds.
- Chabbewal (SC): 53.43% voter turnout; counting in 15 rounds.
- Barnala: 56.34% voter turnout; counting in 16 rounds.
The bypolls were part of a larger electoral process involving 48 assembly seats across 14 states and two Lok Sabha seats in Kerala and Maharashtra. Counting of votes for these elections began on Saturday morning.
The results are also being closely watched in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, where assembly elections were held. Maharashtra reported over 66% voter turnout, while Jharkhand recorded 68.45%, both surpassing the turnout in their respective 2019 elections.
