Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 10 (HBTV): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who holds the distinction of being the state's longest-serving CM and the only one to have served two consecutive terms, addressed the possibility of a third term in the 2027 Assembly elections, stating that 'in a democracy, the government will be formed by whoever the people support'.
The Chief Minister emphasised that democratic will remains the guiding principle for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s future in the state.
Asked about his rare achievement of back-to-back terms, Adityanath attributed the success to the BJP's governance model.
'This is the first time a Chief Minister has served five years continuously and then formed the government again with a two-thirds majority. For the last eight years, we've been serving here because of our model of service, security, and governance that the BJP has effectively applied... In a democracy, who the people support will form the government,' he said.
On whether he would aim for a third term, he responded, 'I will not try. Our party will try... Any member of the BJP can become Chief Minister.'
When questioned about speculation regarding his potential move to Delhi and entry into national politics, Adityanath — who previously served as a five-time Lok Sabha MP from Gorakhpur before joining the state Assembly — stated that such transitions occur only when there is a 'desire to move the inheritance forward'. He redirected the conversation to highlight the development of Ayodhya under his government.
Reflecting on his tenure, the Chief Minister pointed to his government’s achievements over the past eight years, stating that the people's consistent support was a significant accomplishment.
'I can say that in the last eight years, our government has been working with Prime Minister Modi under his guidance and vision. For the complete development of Uttar Pradesh, whatever the plan was prepared, those areas have developed tremendously and the Janata Janardhan supported it. And I consider that the support of Janata Janardhan as the government's achievement,' he said.
He also highlighted progress in sectors such as agriculture, youth development, infrastructure, investment, law and order, and tourism, describing Uttar Pradesh as a key example of balanced growth.
'In many areas... be it agriculture, youth development, infrastructure, investment, law and order, tourism, or what the Prime Minister says about the best solution for inheritance and development, then Uttar Pradesh is one of the most important examples,' he said.
