Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 19 (HBTV): The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation reported on Thursday that a total of 105 people were admitted to five different hospitals following the Mumbai boat accident. Of these, 90 individuals have either been discharged or are in stable condition.
The BMC also confirmed that two people are in critical condition, and 13 people have died. "Search and rescue operations are still continuing by various agencies, including the Indian Navy," the BMC stated.
The Indian Navy vessel lost control during engine trials in Mumbai Harbour due to a malfunction. As a result, the boat collided with a passenger ferry, which subsequently capsized. Four of the six individuals aboard the Navy boat that collided with the ferry lost their lives, while one of them is critically injured. The ferry had approximately 110 passengers, including 20 children, according to Indian Navy officials.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of INR 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased in the boat mishap.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured that the government would provide full assistance to those affected, with rescue operations continuing. He also announced an ex-gratia of INR 5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the families of the deceased.
Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant stated on Thursday that an inquiry will be conducted, and action will be taken accordingly. "An inquiry will be done into the whole matter, and action will be taken. If there is some technical error, it is understandable, but if someone was operating a speedboat for enjoyment, then action should be taken against them," Samant told ANI.
Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande described the accident as "very saddening." She said, "Such accidents are very saddening... Yesterday, the CM spoke about the causes behind this. The government will take care of the families of those who lost their lives. Something will also be done for those who are injured. This is an accident and should not be politicised... Several rules and regulations are already in place. Despite this, if there is human error, that should be addressed as well."
