Chamoli (Uttarakhand) [India], March 1 (HBTV): The Indian Army on Saturday morning said it had successfully rescued 14 more workers of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) who had been trapped under snow following an avalanche near Mana village in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
According to the Indian Army, search and rescue operations have been ongoing for more than 24 hours.
Brigadier M.S. Dhillon of the Indian Army said that a rescue team successfully evacuated 14 more people from the avalanche site.
‘The Indian Army carried out rescue operations throughout the night. One team rescued 14 more people trapped in the avalanche. They are being taken for medical treatment, and one of them is in critical condition,’ Dhillon said.
‘With a slight respite in the weather, three injured personnel have been evacuated from Mana to Joshimath for critical medical care using Indian Army-hired civil helicopters,’ Surya Command of the Indian Army posted on X.
Meanwhile, all available equipment and personnel are being deployed in collaboration with various agencies to assist with the rescue efforts.
So far, 47 out of the 55 BRO workers trapped after the avalanche have been safely rescued.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari stated that four Indian Army helicopters have joined the rescue operation.
‘Of the total 55 people, 47 have been rescued from Mana. We have brought seven people to Joshimath Hospital, where they are under treatment and medical observation. Three of them are stable. I hope the remaining workers will be rescued soon,’ Tiwari said.
The Uttarakhand government has issued helpline numbers for those seeking assistance or information regarding the avalanche.
