The Delhi HC has granted six weeks of interim bail to Haryana-based mining businessman Vedpal Singh Tanwar for post-surgery recovery.

New Delhi [India], January 28 (HBTV): The Delhi High Court on Monday granted six weeks of interim bail to Haryana-based mining businessman Vedpal Singh Tanwar for post-surgery recovery. Tanwar is an accused in a money laundering case linked to illegal sand mining in Haryana.

Justice Vikas Mahajan granted six weeks of interim bail, noting that he had undergone surgery while in custody and required proper care for recovery.

He has been granted interim bail on furnishing a bond of INR 5 lakh and two sureties of the same amount.

Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa, along with Advocate SS Boparai, appeared to seek six weeks of interim bail, arguing that Tanwar had undergone surgery in custody on January 16, 2025.

The counsel stated that Tanwar had previously undergone two surgeries on October 5 and November 28 last year. Now, having undergone a third surgery, he required further medical care. He was granted interim bail on medical grounds earlier, and his regular bail application is still pending before the court.

A charge sheet was filed in July 2024 by the Enforcement Directorate. The petitioner’s counsel argued that since the trial has not progressed since then, Tanwar should not be kept in custody, particularly after undergoing a third surgery.

On the other hand, Advocate Zoheb Hossain, special counsel for the Enforcement Directorate, opposed the plea, stating that Tanwar could receive treatment at the best hospital while in custody.

The court remarked, ‘How long can you keep a person in the hospital? There is a risk of infection.’

Hossain further submitted that, in this situation, Tanwar may be granted four weeks of interim bail with no further extension on the same grounds.
