New Delhi [India], January 9 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday directed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure the complete implementation of new criminal laws in the seven commissionerates of Uttar Pradesh by March 31 and extend it across the entire state as soon as possible.
Shah’s directive came during a meeting in the national capital to review the implementation of three new criminal laws in Uttar Pradesh. The laws in question are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023.
The seven police commissionerates in Uttar Pradesh are Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj, and Varanasi. The Home Minister instructed the Chief Minister to review the progress of implementing these laws in February and emphasized the importance of fully executing them in the state promptly. Shah also suggested that the Chief Minister conduct progress reviews every 15 days, while the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) should meet weekly with officials from all concerned departments.
Amit Shah highlighted that the full implementation of the new criminal laws in a populous state like Uttar Pradesh would send a positive message across the country. Stressing the role of technology, he recommended that every district in the state have more than one forensic mobile van. He proposed dividing forensic teams into three categories—serious, common, and very common—to ensure efficient use of resources and prioritize serious cases.
The Home Minister also underscored the importance of regular monitoring of the status of Zero FIRs, ensuring that those registered are transferred to the respective states without delay. The meeting reviewed the implementation and current status of provisions related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensics in Uttar Pradesh.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Uttar Pradesh Government, including the Union Home Secretary, the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), and the Director General of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), participated in the meeting.
During the discussions, Shah remarked that the three new criminal laws introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are victim-centric rather than punishment-oriented, aiming to ensure speedy justice. (ANI)
