New Delhi [India], April 26 (HBTV): Safdarjung Hospital has achieved a new milestone in its robotic surgery programme with the successful removal of a giant adrenal tumour in a 36-year-old woman using minimally invasive robotic technology.
Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Dr Sandeep Bansal, informed that the adrenal tumour, measuring 18.2 x 13.5 cm, is the largest ever adrenal tumour in the world to have been removed robotically.
The robotic procedure was conducted by Professor and Head of the Department of Urology and Renal Transplant, Dr Pawan Vasudeva, along with Dr Niraj Kumar and Dr Avishek Mandal. The anaesthesia team included Dr Sushil, Dr Bhavya, and Dr Megha.
The surgery was considered high-risk as the tumour had not only grown to a massive size but was also adherent to three critical structures: the inferior vena cava, liver, and right kidney. The tumour had to be removed completely without causing damage to any of these organs.
Dr Vasudeva explained that precise dissection is essential in such surgeries and credited the Da Vinci robot’s 3D vision and dextrous robotic arms for enabling complex procedures with enhanced precision compared to conventional laparoscopy. In this case, the surgery lasted over three hours and was completed without complications. The patient had an uneventful recovery and was discharged within three days.
Robotic surgery offers multiple advantages, including keyhole incisions, greater surgical accuracy, reduced postoperative pain, quicker recovery, and early discharge. Dr Vasudeva noted that, had the surgery been performed through the open route, it would have required a skin incision over 20 cm long, with full recovery taking several weeks.
Dr Bansal stated that this achievement reflects Safdarjung Hospital’s expertise in robotic surgery and its commitment to delivering advanced healthcare free of cost to all patients. He added that a procedure of this complexity would typically cost several lakh INR in a private hospital. (ANI)
