Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], April 10 (HBTV): For the past 22 years, Satpurush Wankhede has made it his mission to feed birds daily at the iconic Ambazari Garden in Nagpur. Committed to his self-imposed duty, Wankhede begins each morning with a backpack full of grains and water containers, spending three hours feeding birds at various spots in the park.
Wankhede, who runs a two-wheeler repair workshop, is widely known as the ‘Birdman of Nagpur’ for his consistent efforts, which attract hundreds of birds daily.
He emphasised that his work is self-funded and driven purely by his love for nature and concern over rapid urbanisation. He also underscored the importance of preserving green spaces in cities.
‘I consider them my friends. My only aim is to protect nature and the environment, which gives us everything. Amid increasing concrete jungles, such gardens become crucial,’ Wankhede said.
‘I have been doing this for 22 to 23 years. Any good thing that we do is pleasing. I have a workshop for two-wheeler repair. I earn this much to run my family and continue this work (feeding birds). I earn both for my family and them (birds) as they are part of my family,’ he added.
With Nagpur’s expanding concrete infrastructure, natural sources of food and water for birds are diminishing. Wankhede’s daily efforts provide critical support to local birdlife.
Over time, his dedication has earned admiration from locals, some of whom occasionally join him. His initiative has not only contributed to bird conservation but also encouraged greater environmental consciousness within the community.
