Chandigarh [India], March 30 (HBTV): The Special Court for CBI Cases in Chandigarh on Saturday sentenced former Chandigarh Police DSP Ram Chander Meena and private individual Aman Grover to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for terms ranging from four to seven years in a INR 70 lakh bribery case, the CBI stated.
Meena was sentenced to seven years' RI with a fine of INR 1 lakh, while Grover received a four-year RI term with a fine of INR 20,000.
The CBI had registered the case on August 13, 2015, against the accused, including those convicted by the court. It was alleged that private individuals had demanded a bribe of INR 70 lakh on behalf of then-DSP Meena and a sub-inspector of Chandigarh Police to avoid arresting the complainant’s parents in a case registered with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), Chandigarh.
The CBI laid a trap and caught the private individuals red-handed on August 13, 2015, while they were demanding and accepting a bribe of INR 40 lakh in cash and a postdated cheque of INR 30 lakh from the complainant. The individuals were caught taking the bribe on behalf of the accused public servants.
Following the investigation, a chargesheet was filed on October 9, 2015, before the Special CBI Court in Chandigarh against the accused. During the trial proceedings, one of the accused passed away, leading to the abatement of proceedings against him.
The court, after trial, found Meena and Grover guilty on Friday and pronounced their sentences on Saturday.
