New Delhi [India], December 19 (HBTV): INDIA Bloc MPs, led by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest on Thursday in the Parliament premises, demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks about Babasaheb Ambedkar. Many MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sanjay Raut, Mahua Majhi, and Ram Gopal Yadav, were seen wearing blue clothes as a symbol of protest against the Home Minister's comments.
The INDIA Bloc MPs announced plans to march to Makar Dwar, demanding an apology and the resignation of Amit Shah. The protest followed remarks made by Shah, in which he lashed out at the Congress party, claiming it had made taking Ambedkar's name a 'fashion'. "If they had taken the name of God so many times instead of Ambedkar, they would have got heaven for seven lives," Shah said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut urged Shah to apologize if his words were a slip of the tongue. "BJP has no work left. BJP is a party which is sitting idle. Amit Shah is the Home Minister of the country. If he has made a mistake, if there was a slip of the tongue, he should apologise. There is no crime in apologising over Dr. Ambedkar, he is a personality that has a God-like status...The man who provided dignity to the backward of the country is like God, even greater than him. You have used wrong words for him...So, apologise," Raut said.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also condemned Shah's remarks, stating that the BJP does not have basic respect for the person regarded as the maker of the Constitution. Speaking to ANI, Priyanka said, "The manner in which he (Amit Shah) has insulted Babasaheb and after that, this morning, they tampered with Babasaheb's photo on Twitter. This is a mindset that vandalises the statue of Babasaheb. Who will trust them? They say that they do not want to end reservation, that they do not want to change the Constitution. They do not have the basic respect; he (Babasaheb Ambedkar) is the Constitution maker. You are saying this about him."
The controversy intensified as Congress and other opposition members protested in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday against Shah's remarks, which were made during his attack on Congress in his speech in Rajya Sabha. The issue escalated into a major political controversy, with Congress demanding Shah's resignation, while BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, targeted the opposition party.
In a press conference, Amit Shah accused Congress of being "anti-B.R. Ambedkar and anti-Constitution". Responding to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's call for his resignation, Shah said it would not affect the Congress party's fate, adding that the Congress will remain in the opposition for the next 15 years, regardless of his resignation.
