Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 6 (HBTV): Four police constables posted at Dharavi police station in Mumbai have been suspended for allegedly accepting bribes from hawkers in exchange for not taking action against them, officials said on Thursday.
The action was taken after a video of the officers accepting bribes went viral on social media.
The suspended police constables have been identified as Mahendra Pujari, Kashinath Gajre, Gangadhar Kharat, and Appasaheb Wakchoure.
In a separate bribery incident last month, the Delhi Police Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested two individuals, including a government stenographer, for allegedly demanding a bribe in connection with the revocation of a GST registration suspension.
According to an official release, a shopkeeper who runs an electronics business approached the Anti-Corruption Branch, alleging that his GST registration had been suspended on frivolous grounds.
The complainant claimed he had already submitted the required documents and fine in response to a notice issued on January 9, 2025. However, despite multiple meetings with the concerned GST officer (GSTO) and his stenographer, Mohit Yadav, his GST registration remained suspended.
The complainant alleged that Yadav demanded a bribe of INR 50,000 on behalf of GSTO Arifullah Khan of Ward No. 74 to revoke the suspension.
Frustrated by the demand, the complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Branch, which then organized a raid.
The raiding team, accompanied by the complainant and a witness, reached the Department of Trade & Taxes office at Vyapar Bhawan, IP Estate, New Delhi.
During the operation, Mohit Yadav allegedly directed the complainant to hand over the bribe money to his private accomplice, Chandan Kumar. Upon receiving a pre-arranged signal from the witness, the ACB team moved in and apprehended both Yadav and Kumar while they were accepting the bribe of INR 50,000.
