Zunheboto, Nagaland, February 21 (HBTV): The department of Land Resources observed the ‘watershed yatra Campaign 2025’ in Surumi village. The campaign aims to promote sustainable watershed management and awareness about the importance of conserving natural resources.

The District Project Officer for Land Resources at Zunheboto, I Acato Chishi, spoke on the theme “Conservation of soil and water.” He highlighted the importance of protecting natural resources and acknowledged the efforts of villagers in maintaining ecological balance. He urged the community to use resources wisely and adopt sustainable practices to prevent environmental degradation.

Further, Dr Hutoka Jakha from the Agricultural Technology Management Agency, stressed on the shortage of vegetables in winter and suggested that Surumi, with its favorable climate could collaborate with the Horticulture department to enhance agricultural productivity. He encouraged villagers to take advantage of the region’s climate for better crop cultivation, therefore avoiding deforestation.

The event featured a speech by Devender Singh Dhapola, who provided insights into the ‘Watershed Yatra’ initiated by the department of Land Resources at Delhi. He explained that the event was covering 26 states, with most states participating for 60 days. The program for Nagaland is set for 20 days.

The campaign was formally inaugurated by Sirvaj Singh Chouhan. Singh pointed out that the objective of the event is to instill a sense of awareness and responsibility among the people regarding the conservation of water, soil, and forests. Singh said conservation of water is directly linked to the Jal Jeevan Mission. He encouraged coffee growers in Nagaland, urging young entrepreneurs to take advantage of the region’s rich coffee production by opening cafes in Delhi.

During his visit to various locations, Singh observed extensive deforestation and expressed deep concern at the large number of trees being felled. Drawing a comparison, he mentioned that in his home state, Uttarakhand, cutting down a single tree can result in a 10-year jail sentence. He strongly encouraged people to stop deforestation and conserve them for the future generations.
