Niuland death chase case: Deceased was involved in robbery, assault, say police

Dimapur police on Monday issued a press release clarifying details about the circumstances that led to the death of a man who was killed by a police vehicle during a chase.

Chumoukedima, Nagaland, July 30 (HBTV): Dimapur police on Monday issued a press release clarifying details about the circumstances that led to the death of a man, identified as one Ngukavi Yeptho, who was killed by a police vehicle during a chase in Niuland district.    

Police said to have received a First Information Report on July 25 stating that a group of four to five unidentified individuals in a white Scorpio had abducted, assaulted, and robbed two persons along the 4-lane highway under Showba village on July 22.        

During investigation, it was found that the victims, including a woman, were blindfolded and taken to unknown locations where they were not only robbed but also coerced to transfer money to an account via Gpay. It was further revealed that the woman was physically and sexually assaulted.  She was disrobed and filmed with the intention to blackmail them from reporting the matter to the police, the updates said.   

Based on the investigation and digital footprints the authorities recovered, a police was dispatched on the night of July 25 to Tokugha village in Niuland district, where one of the prime accused persons was located.       

During the operation, the accused Ngukavi Yeptho fled on a motorbike, which resulted in a pursuit by the police. His motorbike skidded and he fell, the clarification stated. As the vehicle on which the police were in and was chasing the suspect could not stop instantly, one of its wheels slightly ran over the motorbike and the rider before ultimately crashing on the right side of the road into a drain, the police said.                       

Police said the injured suspect was immediately rushed to Referral Hospital where he succumbed to injury. In this connection, a case has been registered at Niuland Police Station for further investigation. 

Further, in order to ensure fair and impartial investigation, the police personnel involved in the incident have been placed under suspension, the updates said.
