Nagaland Cabinet moves forward on ENPO’s autonomy issue; district for Pochury community announced

Kohima, Nagaland, October 30 (HBTV): The Nagaland government has decided to forward the proposal of the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) for an autonomous region. This decision was taken during a meeting of the state Cabinet in Kohima. Another significant decision that was taken at the meeting was to create a separate district for the Pochury people.

In a joint press briefing on October 30, minister and government spokesperson CL John and Minister KG Kenye offered updates following a key Nagaland state Cabinet meeting. The Cabinet has moved forward with discussions about the ENPO’s autonomy issue, which has been a long-standing concern for the region.

CL John emphasized that the state is prepared to recommend the ENPO’s proposal for increased local autonomy to the central government under Article 371A, ensuring alignment with existing state provisions. The Eastern Nagaland Legislators’ Union and the ENPO have worked closely to refine these proposals, signaling a united stance within the state government.

Further, in a significant decision, the Cabinet also approved the creation of a separate district for the Pochury community in Phek, meeting a long-standing demand and bringing administrative services closer to the people of the region.

Another issue was the border dispute with Assam. Both the spokesmen addressed escalating border issues with Assam. KG Kenye expressed serious concerns over reported encroachments on Nagaland’s reserve forests by Assam forces, including activities by the paramilitary. The state government plans to take the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs. It will initiate thorough field verification with senior officials to assess the situation, the updates said.
