The advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation Imkong L Imchen has suggested building a tunnel from Chumukedima to Medziphema to avoid landslides and rockfalls.

Kohima, Nagaland, August 28 (HBTV): The advisor for Information & Public Relations and Soil & Water Conservation Imkong L Imchen has suggested building a tunnel from Chumukedima to Medziphema to avoid landslides and rockfalls.

During the discussions in the ongoing 5th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly the advisor emphasized the importance of National Highway-29 and its present condition, which he said, is the lifeline of Kohima to Dimapur. He suggested that a two-lane road from Kohima to Dimapur via Jotsoma should be properly constructed.

Further, he said, Kohima and Dimapur being the state's capital and commercial district of the state, respectively, a tunnel be constructed from Chümoukedima Check Gate to Medziphema in order to avoid landslides and rockfall in that particular area. He also opined that good riding quality road between Kohima and Dimapur may be constructed from a special dispensation mode under the initiative of the leader of the house and the minister in charge.

Supplementing the concerns raised by Imkong L Imchen, advisor for Printing & Stationery and Prisons, KropolVitsu said landslides, rock falls and subsidence occur every year on NH-29 between Kohima and Dimapur especially in the Pakala Pahar area during the monsoon season. Therefore, he strongly advocated construction of a tunnel from Chümoukedima to Medziphema to avert any eventuality between the stretch of the highway.

Vitsu blamed the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited for not maintaining the roads properly thereby causing hardships and inconveniences for the commuters. He said the road between Kohima and Piphema is vulnerable to landslide, rock fall and subsidence due to deforestation, excavation, cultivation etc.

As such, he suggested Kohima- Zhadima- Niuland- Dimapur route should be permanently constructed as an all-weathered road and be used during monsoon.
