Satakha, Zunheboto, January 30 (HBTV): An awareness programme was conducted on January 30 at Satakha Town Hall, Zunheboto, in observance of National Road Safety Month. The event was organized by the District Transport Office of Zunheboto.
The programme was chaired by N. Nchumbemo Kikon, AEI, and began with a welcome address by M.S Thangpong, ADC Satakha, who emphasized the importance of road safety. He highlighted that National Road Safety Month aims to promote awareness about road safety measures, stressing the importance of wearing seat belts, following traffic rules, avoiding reckless driving, wearing helmets on two-wheelers, and condemning hit-and-run incidents.
Er. Hukayi Awomi, Additional Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), delivered a speech on road safety, noting that National Road Safety Month was first observed in 1989 and was later formalized in January 2021 as an annual campaign. He emphasized the importance of road safety awareness and the role of the District Transport Office in this regard. Awomi also urged the public to ensure their vehicles are in good condition by regularly checking brakes, engine oil, tire pressure, coolant levels, and mirrors.
During his address, Awomi highlighted the critical role of adhering to traffic rules, noting that army vehicles strictly follow them. He pointed out that roadways account for 90% of transportation, while airways, railways, and waterways make up only 10%. Awomi shared alarming statistics, revealing that in Uttar Pradesh, one person dies every three minutes in road accidents. He added that 95% of accidents occur due to careless driving, with the majority involving young adults aged 16-35.
Awomi also stressed the importance of having a valid blood group listed on one's driving license, which can be crucial during emergencies. He provided details on driving license eligibility, noting that individuals can apply at age 16 for 50cc vehicles, 18 for light vehicles, and 21 for heavy vehicles, with mandatory renewals every three years.
Motor Vehicle Checker Lanuyanger discussed traffic violations and penalties, stressing the importance of vehicles displaying High-Security Number Plates for identification.
